SANDPOINT — The new year has brought many changes to the Bonner County Historical Society and Museum.

Among them, the departure of longtime executive director Olivia Luther, who is stepping down to be the director of marking and community relations for Kaniksu Health Services.

Her departure is effective Jan. 31.

“During her eight year tenure with the museum, Olivia has been instrumental in promoting the value of the museum to our community,” Ruth Wimberly said for the board in a press release.

The board noted that Luther and the museum staff have worked to involve the museum with the community through numerous successful events such as Movies in the Park, Trick-or-Treat at the Museum, Historic Pub Crawl, Yard Sale, educational programs, exciting new exhibits and expanded acquisitions.

“We are grateful for her service,” Wimberly said. “We cannot thank Olivia enough for the dedication, passion, enthusiasm and motivation she has given the museum over the past eight years.”

Heather Upton, the current museum curator, will assume the role of interim executive director on Feb. 1.

“Heather’s excitement about local history comes alive through her exciting exhibits, tours and speaking engagements,” Wimberly said. “She looks forward to using her five years of experience at the museum to assist her in her new role. Heather’s goal is to continue to increase community engagement with the museum through exhibits, events and educational programs.”
