Fouls doom Lakeland in loss at Moscow

MOSCOW — The Lakeland Hawks were outscored 21-7 from the foul line and had four starters foul out in a 51-48 loss to the Moscow Bears in a 4A Inland Empire League game Tuesday night at Bear Den.

Ben Zubaly and Noah Haaland scored 13 points each for the Hawks (13-2, 1-1 4A IEL), and Carson Seay added 12.

“I don’t think we shot all that well tonight,” Lakeland coach Dave Stockwell said. “It’s hard to win on the road, but we had plenty of chances to win. The kids battled and I was proud of them.”

Blake Buchanan scored 13 points for Moscow (7-8, 2-0).

Lakeland hosts Moscow next Tuesday.

SANDPOINT — Kolton Mitchell scored 15 points and Chris Irvin added 12 as the visiting Timberwolves used a big second quarter to pull away from the Bulldogs in a nonleague game moved to the old Bulldog Gym due to a leaky roof at Sandpoint High.

Lake City (11-4) outscored Sandpoint (7-8) 23-5 in the second quarter to open a 32-14 halftime lead.

“We’ve been a pretty good defensive team all year,” Lake City coach Jim Winger said. “After Christmas break, we’ve really picked it up a notch. We’ve got nine guys on our team, and all nine are very good defenders. ... defense is attitude and playing hard, and we’re certainly doing that. Our defense has gotten dramatically better since Christmas break.”

Brandon Casey led Sandpoint with nine points.

Lake City plays at Coeur d’Alene on Thursday in 5A Inland Empire League play.

BONNERS FERRY — Trailing by one at halftime, the host Badgers went on a 14-1 run in the third quarter to take command of the Intermountain League matchup.

Freshman Braeden Blackmore scored 21 points, many of them on putback baskets, as Bonners Ferry evened its IML record at 1-1. Ty Bateman added 17 as four Badgers scored in double figures.

“We had better ball movement after halftime,” Badgers coach Andy Rice said. “(Timberlake) played hard and pressured us, but it was one of our games where we didn’t get rattled and took care of the ball.”

Senior Jacob James tallied 19 for Timberlake, despite constant hounding by Badger defenders. His blocked shot sparked a 9-0 Tigers run late in the second quarter, with Hunter Higgins sinking two free throws just before intermission to give the visitors a 24-23 lead.

“We had the momentum (at halftime), but we haven’t played a good third quarter all year,” Timberlake coach Mike Menti said. “They did a good job of controlling the tempo of the game.”

Jack McDonald added 12 points for Timberlake (2-12, 1-1 IML), which plays at St. Maries on Thursday.

KELLOGG — Gavin Luna scored 16 points and Tyler Oertli added 12 as the host Wildcats downed the Spartans in Intermountain League play at Andrews Gymnasium.

Graden Nearing, the leading scorer for Kellogg (9-5, 2-0 IML) who had missed the last three games with a hand injury, added 10 points in limited minutes.

Kellogg had 14 steals in the first half just scored just 25 points and led by 13 at halftime.

“Guys were flying around in the first half; we just weren’t making shots,” Kellogg coach Jeff Nearing said.

Trent Kreager scored a game-high 17 points for Priest River (4-7, 0-2).

Kellogg travels to Timberlake on Saturday.
