A 21-year-old McDonald’s worker who is accused of raping two teenage girls will stay in jail after a Coeur d’Alene judge Monday denied a defense attorney’s claim that her client’s confession was coerced.

Nathan T. Granger was arrested at McDonald’s in September after a 4 a.m. conversation with Coeur d’Alene police, which his attorney called an interrogation.

Defense attorney Jill Bolton said Granger was not apprised of his Miranda rights when he met with two uniformed officers for more than an hour. Police sat in a booth with Granger, and one of them sat between Granger and the door, Bolton said.

“What pursued was a prolonged interrogation,” Bolton said.

First District Judge Cynthia K.C. Meyer sided with prosecutors who argued that Granger was not coerced or threatened, that he voluntarily gave up information, and eventually a confession, before his arrest.

In addition, Granger told officers of another underage victim, police said.

Granger was arrested Sept. 4 after allegedly twice having sex with a 16-year-old at his residence on the 200 block of Shelby Lane in Coeur d’Alene, according to a police report.

The alleged victim reported the rape to police four days later, and was contacted by a 14-year-old who also accused Granger of raping her, according to police reports.

After Granger’s arrest, police seized his backpack, phone and longboard, according to a report.

Bolton asked the judge to reduce the $100,000 bond for her client, but Meyer refused to consider a bond reduction.

“The court has concerns about whether the defendant would commit similar crimes if released,” Meyer said.

Bolton argued that her client had zero criminal history and had been sitting in jail for three months.

“This is not a violent stranger,” she said. “The charges are being very zealously challenged.”
