COEUR d’ALENE — Three weeks ago, in a similar raucous setting for the Fight for the Fish spirit game, Coeur d’Alene adjusted what it wanted to do to suit slowing down Lake City.

The Vikings lost that game 61-47 on Jan. 10 at Lake City High.

Thursday, the roles reversed.

Freshman Madi Symons scored 15 points and sophomore Skylar Burke added 14 points for the Vikings, who clamped down defensively to beat the Timberwolves 55-45 in the 5A Inland Empire League finale for both schools at Viking Court.

With the win, Coeur d’Alene (16-4, 5-1 5A IEL) and Lake City (14-6, 5-1) will share the league title, but Timberwolves taking the top seed to the Region 1 tourney starting next Friday, thanks to a larger margin of victory over Coeur d’Alene in the first league meeting. Both teams will host opening round games, with opponents to be determined following tonight’s Post Falls-Lewiston game at Post Falls High.

“It’s unreal,” said Coeur d’Alene junior guard Tori Younker, whose team hadn’t beaten Lake City since the 2013-14 season, when the Vikings won their last state title. “We’ve put a lot of work into it coming in as freshmen. This one has been on our backs a little bit, and it feels good going into the district tournament to have that one done. Whatever seed we have going in, we’re going to have to play someone good eventually. Whoever we play first doesn’t really matter to us.”

“Whether we’re first, second, third or fourth in the league, this win is just a morale boost for our kids,” said first-year Coeur d’Alene coach Nicole Symons. “They’ve never beat Lake City. They’ve worked hard and we’re gelling as a team. It’s a good time to be hitting on all cylinders and playing well defensively.”

Coeur d’Alene outscored Lake City 19-12 in the third quarter to break open a 21-17 halftime lead after Lake City post Brooklyn Rewers got her fourth foul with 1:57 remaining in the third.

“When we played them at the Fish, we tried to adjust to stop them,” Nicole Symons said. “This time, we wanted to play our style of basketball, which is in-your-face, full-court defense and pushing the ball and scoring in transition. Obviously, they wanted to slow the ball down and get the ball into Brooklyn — and she’s a great player — so we wanted to try to control the tempo of the game and pound the ball at them.”

Rewers scored 16 of her 20 points in the second half for Lake City.

“Brooklyn fought like crazy,” Lake City coach James Anderson said. “They brought a lot of help, and a lot of early help and did everything they could to keep her from getting involved in the game. We’ve got to do a better job of moving the ball around and creating opportunities for her.”

Lake City had won nine straight games since a 42-41 loss against Caldwell in the Timber-Lion tournament in Boise on Jan. 4.

“It’s probably not the worst thing to take a hit going into the district tournament,” Anderson said. “It gets us a little more focused and we can make some adjustments to things that teams have been doing to us.”

Aubrey Avery scored 12 points for Lake City. Younker and Jaelyn Brainard-Adams added eight points each for Coeur d’Alene.

Madi Symons scored 11 of her 15 in the second half for Coeur d’Alene.

“Madi has been our leading scorer, and knew it was going to be tough scoring against Rewers, so we pulled her out top a little bit,” Nicole Symons said. “We wanted to make Madi a facilitator and make things happen at the top of the court. It’s been a lot of fun to see the girls hitting their stride right now.”

Lake City 8 9 12 16 — 45

Coeur d’Alene 10 11 19 15 — 55

LAKE CITY — Pickford 6, Avery 12, Chase 0, Parks 0, Shanley 2, Rewers 20, Munoz 0.

COEUR d’ALENE — Matheson 0, Brainard-Adams 8, Whiteman 4, Symons 15, Younker 8, Chavez 4, Froehlich 2, Zanetti 0, Burke 14.
