Montana crossed the 1,000 mark for cumulative cases after the state’s COVID-19 Task Force announced another 50 new positive cases Wednesday morning.
According to the Task Force’s website, the state has performed more than 93,000 coronavirus tests to date, and of those, 1,016 have tested positive. About one-third of those positives are considered “active,” there are 14 “active hospitalizations,” 658 “recoveries” and 22 total deaths.
As of Wednesday, the bulk of the state’s currently active cases are in counties where case counts have been the highest since the start of the outbreak.
The Task Force’s map shows there are 68 active cases in Yellowstone County, 50 in Gallatin County, 42 in Missoula County, 36 in Bighorn County and 15 in Flathead County. Several other areas, including Ravalli, Cascade and Glacier counties, are showing at least a dozen active cases as well.
In total, 271 positives have been reported in Gallatin, 189 in Yellowstone, 89 in Missoula, 77 in Bighorn and 58 in Flathead. Although health officials say there are likely more positive cases than are being reported, state data currently shows there are 19 counties in Montana where no positive cases have been reported.
Montana is still showing far fewer cases than neighboring rural states. As of Wednesday, both South Dakota and Idaho had experienced more than 6,000 cases, North Dakota was sitting at about 3,500 and Wyoming had reported about 1,500 cases.
