BONNERS FERRY — Heather Scott, District 1 state representative, will be in Bonners Ferry on Thursday, July 9, to conduct a “civics class” with representatives from the Center for Self-Governance.

Scott’s recent visit to Bonners Ferry was May 21 when she spoke to a standing-room-only crowd, inside the Bonners Ferry Providence Presbyterian Church. During that event, Scott was sponsored by the John Birch Society to speak about the novel coronavirus pandemic.

“During my recent speaking events in the county, many had asked about training,” said Scott. “I have invited the Center for Self-Governance to North Idaho to teach a foundational civics class. They are great!”

Scott’s “Planned-demic,” event in May drew people from Coeur d’Alene, Spokane, Blanchard, Priest River, Sandpoint, and other locations to attend the meeting at the church.

According to The Center for Self-Governance’s website, they are, “... a non-profit, non-partisan educational organization dedicated to advancing a stable civil society, balanced human government, and a well-educated populace.” The non-profit is based in Washington state.

The July 9 event will cover topics such as what it means to be a citizen of Boundary County and the United States. The presenters plan to speak on understanding power, control, and government and how citizens may be more effective in governance.

“I will also make time after the class to delve into county/state structure, discuss the current recall process (commissioners and governor) and answer any other questions about engaging with the government that might be helpful,” said Scott. “This is a wonderful class and opportunity to learn how to start engaging in the system effectively so you do not waste your energy.”

The civics class discussion is scheduled for Thursday, July 9 from 4:40 to 8:30 p.m. at the Bonners Ferry VFW Hall, 6635 Lincoln St. The cost for attendance is $50 and attendees must register for a seat prior to the class online at centerforselfgovernance.com.
