GEORGE — A fire along Old Vantage Highway north of Interstate 90 late Saturday prompted Grant County Sheriff’s Office to issue an evacuation order to climbers and campers who might have been in the area.

According to GCSO spokesperson Kyle Foreman, the fire grew to roughly 15-20 acres and was headed toward I-90 until the wind shifted.

“It was contained around midnight,” he said.

There is only one house in the area, Foreman said, and a recreation area next to the Columbia River and managed by Grant PUD that is popular with hikers and climbers.

“I don’t know how many people were down there,” Foreman said.
