Masks are now required in Lincoln County in all businesses, government offices and other indoor public spaces according to a July 15 directive issued by Gov. Steve Bullock. Face coverings also will be required at outdoor gatherings drawing 50 or more people where social distancing is impossible or being ignored.

Bullock’s directive applies to all counties with four or more active cases of the novel coronavirus. On July 14, the Lincoln County Health Department reported that 33 county residents have active cases of COVID-19. Forty residents total are known to have contracted the virus since the pandemic began.

During a July 15 press conference where Bullock announced the directive, the governor said enforcing the mandate was the responsibility of all Montanians. In cases where a business refuses service to a customer who is not wearing a mask, Bullock told the press that law enforcement officials could be called to enforce the state’s trespassing laws.

Masks will not be required while eating or drinking, performing strenuous exercise, giving a speech, or engaging in an artistic performance. Residents with a medical condition precluding them from covering their faces and children under the age of five will not be required to wear masks. Temporary exemptions will be granted for residents who are identifying themselves or receiving medical evaluations or treatments.
