COVID cases resume surge in North Idaho

SANDPOINT — The Panhandle Health District recorded 107 new cases of novel coronavirus on Thursday, pushing the region beyond the 1,000-case mark.
The health district said there have 1,064 infections in the five northern counties since the COVID-19 outbreak took hold in March.
Kootenai County has accrued 904 cases over the course of the pandemic, 895 of which have been lab-confirmed. The health district said 565 of the cases remain active.
Bonner County, meanwhile, has had 91 cases, 85 of which are lab-confirmed, according to PHD. The district said 59 of Bonner County’s cases are active.
Benewah County has had 27 cases, all of which are lab-confirmed. However, only three of the cases are still active. Shoshone County has had 19 cases, all of which have been confirmed via lab testing. Eighteen of Shoshone County’s remain active, the health district said.
Boundary County has had nine cases, all of which have been lab-confirmed. Eight of the cases remain active, according to PHD.
There are 14 additional cases, all of which have been lab-confirmed, involving residents whose primary county of residency is undetermined.
The virus has caused 35 hospitalizations since the outbreak and 11 people remain hospitalized. The district said 409 Panhandle residents are no longer being monitored for the virus.
The Idaho Department of Health & Welfare reported 688 new confirmed or probable COVID-19 infections on Thursday, lifting the statewide total to 13,133, which includes 114 fatalities.
The Northeast Tri-County Health District in Washington state said eight new cases emerged on Thursday, bringing the regional total to 59 confirmed cases. Four of the new cases turned up in Pend Oreille County, while Stevens and Ferry counties each picked up two additional cases, according to NETCHD.
Pend Oreille County has had 17 cases since the pandemic began, while Stevens County has had 36 cases. Ferry County has had six cases, one of which proved fatal, the health district said.
The Montana State Department of Public Health said 134 new confirmed cases were tallied on Thursday, lifting the statewide total to 2,231 cases. Lincoln County has 33 confirmed cases, while Sanders County has three, according to the state.
