MOSES LAKE — Girl Scout Cookies were on sale for the final time in Moses Lake yesterday as the revised sale period came to a close. The annual sale was extended from the typical four-week stint to six weeks this summer.
Troop Leader Debbie Ostler said they have sold about a third of the boxes this year that they would normally sell at their traditional booths each day. They could not have booths this year with the state’s coronavirus restrictions.
Luckily, she said, they have had a lot of support from the local community.
“We’ve talked to local businesses, and they’ve been purchasing cases of cookies to help us out,” Ostler said. “And a bunch of other organizations have been helping us out. It’s actually turned out to be much better than we thought for our local community. They’ve all been trying to pitch in.”
Ostler said there are three Girl Scout troops in Moses Lake and one each in Othello, Ephrata and Royal City. Sales kicked off on May 29 when cookies first arrived and wrapped up on Monday.
Ostler said the Girl Scouts were hoping, with the extension of the sale period, to sell more, and they still held out hope that Grant County would make it to Phase 3 of the state’s reopening plan. Moving to Phase 3 would have opened up opportunities for more sales.
She added that a lot of local Girl Scouts have been assisting troops in places like Tri-Cities and Yakima that are still in Phase 1.
“There’s a lot of Girl Scouts selling in this area to help them with their troops,” Ostler said. “It’s been a huge benefit for all of them.”
As of Monday afternoon, Ostler said, the local troops had sold more than 14,300 boxes this summer.
