Riverdogs, Spuds summer clubs fare well

GRANT COUNTY — Both the Columbia Basin Riverdogs and Central Washington Spuds finished up a busy scheduled last week. The Spuds finished 3-1 in four games last week, while the Riverdogs won five of six over the weekend.
Central Washington took the first game of its doubleheader against Saint Maries on Tuesday, 8-6. The Spuds traded leads in the back and forth game before pulling ahead for good in the top of the sixth inning. A pair of runs put them ahead for good, outhitting Saint Maries 11-8 in the win.
John Shea and Clayton Kellogg both finished with three hits in the win, including three doubles for Shea. Shea and Reise Raymond led the team with a pair of RBIs each. Shea tossed five innings for the Spuds from the mound as well, notching 10 strikeouts while allowing six runs off six hits.
Saint Maries won the second game of the doubleheader in Saint Maries, Idaho, 11-7. Three runs in the bottom of the first put the Spuds down early before a six-run barrage in the third inning pushed the deficit to 9-0. A seven-run burst in the top of the fifth inning helped trim the lead, but the comeback ultimately fell short.
Friday’s doubleheader against Post Falls kicked off with a 13-3 win, powered by an eight-run seventh inning. Zach Valdez had three hits, homered, drove in four runs and scored three times.
The Spuds won the second game against Post Falls, 14-13. Valdez and Shea both finished 3-4 from the plate, with a pair of doubles for Valdez, one for Shea.
The Riverdogs fell in their Thursday matchup against New Level Xtreme, 14-6. The Riverdogs found themselves behind early after a five-run burst in the top of the first. Four more innings with multiple runs for the New Level squad helped them pull away for good.
Jett Nelson, Seth Olson and Zane Harden each finished with a pair of hits in the defeat. Cooper Correia and Asher Lindgren both notched a pair of RBIs to lead the Riverdogs.
The Riverdogs won on Friday, 13-2, over the Idaho Rockies. A pair of five-run innings helped the Riverdogs pull away, outhitting their opponents 14-6. Five players finished with multiple hits in the win, with Jacob Martinez leading the team with three RBIs. Merrit Jansen threw all five innings in the win, allowing just two runs off six hits with five strikeouts.
Columbia Basin picked up the narrow 6-5 win over 2020 City Baseball to open up Saturday. Three runs in the top of the first for the Riverdogs helped them pull ahead early before 2020 City Baseball evened the score at 5-5 in the bottom of the sixth inning. A run in the top of the eighth helped the Riverdogs walk away on top despite being outhit 7-3.
Nelson picked up two of those hits and drove in a run. He also tossed five innings from the mound, surrendering four runs on six hits, striking out five.
In Saturday’s second game, the Riverdogs won 6-3 over Northwest Athletics thanks to a five-run third inning. Columbia Basin outhit the Athletics 12-7 in the win, with six players nabbing multiple hits. Correia finished with a team-high three RBIs.
The Riverdogs wrapped up the weekend with a 12-5 win over Idaho Prospect Baseball. Up 3-0 after four innings, runs began to pile on the board as the Riverdogs saw their lead trimmed to 6-4 heading into the sixth. Five runs in the top of the next inning helped seal the victory. Correia led the Riverdogs from the plate, finishing 3-4, with a team-high three RBIs as well.
