The Clark Fork River Bridge on Montana 200 one mile north of Trout Creek will be closed beginning Monday, June 1.

Large vehicles and commercial trucks will need to find an alternate route such as Interstate 90 or U.S. 2. Local roads are not suitable for large vehicles. Signage will be in place at major decision points in the region allowing large vehicles an opportunity to plan for an alternate route.

During the six week closure of the Clark Fork River Bridge, Blue Slide Road will serve as a restricted detour for local traffic but is not suitable for large trucks.

Vehicles more than 45 feet long can’t use Blue Slide Road. All other vehicles are allowed to use Blue Slide Road. Trucks weighing more than 16 tons are restricted from using the Vermillion Creek Bridge. All other vehicles including passenger vehicles are able to use the bridge.

In anticipation of increased traffic, the department has been working with Sanders County to improve safety along the Blue Slide Road including added guardrail, signage, delineation and striping.

Advanced notifications, including signing, will be provided regionally to advise of the bridge closure and allow large trucks and other travelers to determine alternate routes that include I-90 and U.S. 2.

During the bridge closure, river access under the bridge will remain open and boats will be able to float under the bridge. The department has also worked closely with local emergency responders, utility service providers and the U.S. Postal Service to ensure that coverage and services continue during construction.

The closure is necessary to speed up replacement of the bridge deck and ensure the safety of motorists and crews working on the bridge. The closure is anticipated to take six weeks.

“Closing the bridge to replace the deck is the safest option and reduces the construction time by a couple of months,” said Missoula District Construction Engineer John Schmidt. “Crews will work as quickly as possible including weekends and nights.”

The project will rehabilitate the Montana 200 Clark Fork River Bridge. The bridge was built in 1958, and requires new concrete decking, structural improvements, new bridge rails, and spot painting of girders. The steel superstructure of the bridge is still in good condition and will remain in place.
