Momentous timber sale announced

A sale of timber that means more to Priest River than any previous sale of timber that has taken place in this vicinity took place Saturday at Sandpoint when I. N. Nash, state land commissioner of Idaho, sold a large tract of state timber, located on Big Creek, at public auction to the Diamond Match Co. for $750,000.

90 Years Ago — 1930

Business news

T. A. Mackey has opened a tire and battery shop in the old garage on Wisconsin Street.

Mrs. Jack McKay reports that she has given up her lease of the hotel in Sandpoint and has now leased the Savoy Hotel in Priest River.

80 Years Ago — 1940

Old-timers gather

About 50 of the oldest settlers in this vicinity gathered in City Park June 15 for a basket picnic, after which they were called to order by Lucy E. Beardmore. Purpose of the meeting was to form a pioneers’ association.

70 Years Ago — 1950

West Side mail route extended

Effective June 1, the regular mail route to Nordman was extended as far as Granite Creek to accommodate the several resorts and cottages during the summer months. These residents are now able to get their mail from mailboxes on the main road instead of driving to Nordman.

60 Years Ago — 1960

New stud mill opens

Marshall G. “Dutch” Shields and William B. “Bill” Shields this week announced the opening of the Shields Lumber Stud Mill. The newly constructed operation is located at the south end of the Pend Oreille River bridge and brings a new industry into this community. The stud mill is a complete stud operation and is equipped with dry kiln and planer.

50 Years Ago — 1970

Dam to hold open house

On June 16 the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers will have completed 195 years of service to the American people. In honor of the occasion, Albeni Falls Dam will hold open house during the Corps’ Engineers Week beginning June 14.

40 Years Ago — 1980

Tree planters, trucker collide

Three people were injured and two vehicles badly damaged in an accident that occurred Friday afternoon in a remote area north of Nordman. Roy Croft of Eugene, Ore., was hospitalized in Newport with leg and back injuries. Doug Cary of Newport and Steve Saxon, also of Eugene, suffered slight injuries that did not require hospitalization. The injured men were employed as tree planters with Far West Reforesters of Dallas, Ore. They and two other tree planters were traveling on a Forest Service road 18 miles north of Nordman, across the Washington border, when their van rounded a blind corner and collided with a logging truck driven by Ron Krizenesky of Priest River, uninjured. Deputy Sheriff Gary Markwardt said neither of the drivers could see the other vehicle on the corner.

Vintage style show set

Priest River Restoration & Revitalization will hold a Vintage Style Show and luncheon in the Congregational church basement June 23. Over 35 outfits will be modeled dating from 1850 to 1950.

Chamber briefs

The Priest River Chamber of Commerce announced that Jimmy Linton is this year’s Bull of the Woods.

Newport-Oldtown Chamber of Commerce president Gary Burroughs died at a Spokane Hospital Thursday night. He was 59.
