June 14, 1970 – BURNED TWICE

Firemen fought a stubborn fire on North Fifth Ave. Thursday night, and again Friday morning. They were called to the blaze at 11 p.m. and again at 7:30 the next morning. Many spectators watched firefighters during the first outbreak, but fewer for the second. Mrs. Art Evans is owner of the house.

CERAMIC FIRMS MOVE TO FIRST AVE.

Two firms which share the same quarters have moved from the old Moon Funeral Home building at Third and Alder to 119 N. First.

Ceramics by Val (Valerie Smith) and Syringa Ceramic & Mold Co. (Neil Kenney) said the new location offers much in customer convenience as well as giving their businesses more room.

ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATED

Mr. and Mrs. Wayne E. Hawkins of Sagle feted their 20th wedding anniversary Monday.

MOON FUNERAL HOME TRANSFERRED

Betty and L.G. “Bud” Moon Jr. handed over the keys to Moon Funeral Home to Patsy and Dale Coffelt June 1. Coffelt, an employee of the Moons for three years, has leased the mortuary and cemetery operation from the Moons. L.G. Moon, Sr. started the mortuary almost 50 years ago. Coffelt’s staff includes Mrs. Helen Newton, secretary, Dwight Sheffler, assistant, and two permanent sextons at the cemetery.

June 14, 1920 – BICYCLE THEFTS

During the past three or four weeks a large number of bicycles have been stolen from local people. For a time it appeared that a systematic thievery of wheels was being carried on, an even dozen disappearing in one week, but the past 10 days a number of these have been found by their owners or mysteriously returned and police officials now believe that the bulk of the stealing is being done by juvenile joyriders not quite large enough to operate somebody else’s Ford.

THE HUMBIRDS TO PLAY HERE

The Humbird Tigers make their second appearance on home grounds Sunday when they play the Morton team on the new Four L field across from the Lincoln school. The new field was plowed, leveled and rolled and is in excellent condition. With a little more work it will be one of the fastest fields in the Inland Empire and should stimulate air-tight baseball by eliminating the bad breaks due in many cases to rough ground.

TOPNOTCH WRESTLING EVENT

One of the best wrestling events here for some years was agreed upon last week when Basanta Singh of Calcutta, India, and Oscar Anderson, Laclede, scratched their names to the articles. Oscar Anderson is well known locally. He holds the world’s welter-weight title. The match will be at the American Legion hall at 9 tomorrow night.
