Teacher honored for leading effort to produce masks

Whitefish High School teacher Todd Spangler was recently recognized by Congressman Greg Gianforte for his efforts working to create plastic filtration masks to protect against the coronavirus.
Gianforte honored Spangler with his Spirit of Montana commendation.
Using the design and open-source software from the developers of the Montana Mask, Spangler contacted people he knew with 3D printers.
In no time, a group of educators, physicians, and dentists started making the needed masks. They produced and delivered hundreds of masks to health care providers and first responders throughout the Flathead.
The group produced about 600 masks and Spangler delivered them throughout the Flathead Valley including to independent health care practices, providers at Kalispell Regional Healthcare, and first responders throughout the region.
Spangler, according to a release, said his effort helped him find purpose during the crisis. He admits being under quarantine was challenging for him and many Montanans, but identifying a need and taking the initiative to help fulfill that need have guided him.
Gianforte’s Spirit of Montana is a weekly recognition of Montanans for their accomplishments, dedication, or service. Gianforte highlights the recipient in the U.S. House of Representatives and personally contacts the honorees.
Gianforte encourages anyone to nominate Montanans for the Spirit of Montana award by contacting his office at 202-225-3211 or by email at https://gianforte.house.gov/contact/email.
