Olympic Trials

Missy Ennis Vanek, a 1997 graduate of Priest River Lamanna High School, is headed for Olympic trials in Sacramento, Calif., on July 14-15. Vanek placed third at the NCAA Nationals in Raleigh, N. C., in heptathlon, a seven separate event competition.

30 Years Ago — 1990

Vandals attack high school building

For the second time in less than a week, vandals have broken high school windows and left nothing but shattered glass and rocks in their wake.

Over the June 9-10 weekend, four windows in the exit area and one large library window have been broken, On June 13 two large windows in the library were broken and three more taken out in the exit area.

The suspects used large rocks and enough force to easily penetrate mesh-reinforced windows. “Whoever did it had a heck of an arm,” said Principal Dave Dudinsky.

“Your lifetime has spanned the most exciting period of progress in the history of America...from wood and coal stoves to electronic ovens.” So read an excerpt from a personal letter from former president Gerald Ford to Jean Ripley Broun of Priest Lake, sent to her on the occasion of her 90th birthday.

Mrs. Broun and about 40 friends and family celebrated the event with a party last Thursday evening at the Priest Lake Lodge. Mrs. Broun also received greetings from President Carter, Idaho Gov. John Evans, and Idaho Sen. James McClure.

50 Years Ago — 1970

Fishing good at Outlet

Outlet Resort news: Audrey Straub of Priest River caught 25 silvers weighing 9 lbs. 6 oz., and Jack Straub caught 25 silvers; John and Maiden Leuer caught 50 silvers; Robert Thompsom of Priest River caught 1 cutthroat and 18 silvers, and Bob Holford of Spokane caught 24 silvers.

60 Years Ago — 1960

Huff places fifth

Ron Huff, Priest River High School track star, was one of a field of 12 athletes who competed for the 1960 Pacific Northwest Decathlon championship at Moses Lake, Wash., June 10-11. Ron finished fifth in the high school division, winning two events of the ten, the 100-meter run and the broad jump. He placed third in the 400-meter run and fourth in the discus.

70 Years Ago — 1950

Bank opens Friday

After waiting 18 years, Priest River will again have a bank to serve the community. The new bank, Bank of North Idaho, will open its door Friday, June 16, in the corner Beardmore Building.

Operating under a state charter, the bank opens with a capitalization of $40,000, plus $10,000 surplus and $10,000 undivided profits. Interest of 2 percent will be paid on time deposits.

80 Years Ago — 1940

Roxy Theater will charge more

The management of the Roxy Theater announces that the new war preparedness tax makes it imperative that they raise their admission prices as follows: adults, 36 cents plus 4 cents federal tax, or 40 cents; students and CCCs, 27 cents, plus 3 cents federal tax, or 30 cents; and kiddies, 7 cents plus 3 cents federal tax--which is the same ticket price of 10 cents as formerly.

Union Oil to start construction

It is reported that the Union Oil Company will soon start work on a super station on their corner location.

100 years Ago — 1920

Hauling cedar, driving logs.

The homesteaders of the Peninsula are using their new road to haul their cedar products to town. The nature of the country traversed by the road can be ascertained by the fact that 2,500 pounds of powder were used to stump it. The logs drives on the Priest and West Branch have been making good progress. If the water stays up, it will not be more than two weeks before the logs will be out of the river.
