SANDPOINT — Six new confirmed novel coronavirus cases, three of which are in Bonner County, emerged on Wednesday, according to the Panhandle Health District.

All told, there are 136 cases in the Panhandle, with 105 cases in Kootenai County and 10 cases in Bonner County. Benewah County has 12 cases and nine cases involve people whose primary county of residence remains undetermined.

The virus, which causes COVID-19, has been attributed to one death in Kootenai County, the health district said. The virus has not been detected in Boundary or Shoshone counties, according to PHD.

Two Panhandle residents have been hospitalized because of the virus and 100 people are no longer being monitored. The virus has caused 14 hospitalizations since the outbreak began.

Valley Vista Care Corp. was notified on Tuesday that a staff member at Valley Vista Care Center of Sandpoint, a 73-bed skilled nursing facility has tested positive for COVID-19.

“Valley Vista Care Corp. and the Sandpoint facility are working closely with Panhandle Health department to direct testing of staff and residents. Currently, all of the other residents and staff members are not showing any signs or symptoms of COVID-19 and Valley Vista is taking all precautions to ensure the safety of our residents and staff,” the company said in a statement that was released on Wednesday.

The Idaho Department of Health & Welfare reported a 92-case spike in new confirmed or probable cases of the virus, pushing the statewide total to 3,632 cases. The death toll held at 88 on Wednesday, Health & Welfare said.

The Northeast Tri-County Health District in Washington state said there were 20 cases within its jurisdiction. There are 16 cases in Stevens County, three in Pend Oreille County and one in Ferry County, which caused the first fatality in the region.

Stevens, Pend Oreille and Ferry counties moved in to Phase 3 of Washington state’s reopening plan on June 5.

“To date, there has been no decision shared by state officials with Northeast Tri-County Health District regarding the timeline for advancement into Phase 4. Under the ‘Safe Start Reopening Plan’ advancement to Phase 4 allows for the resumption of normal social interactions, removes many of the restriction within workplaces, and allows for mass gatherings of people for events, the health district said in a news release.

The health district said there is speculation that it will move into Phase 4 at the same time a vaccine or treatment.

“Based on the limited information available, we do not anticipate advancement to Phase 4 happening any time soon,” the health district said.

The state of Montana reported 18 new confirmed cases of coronavirus on Wednesday, bringing the statewide total to 630 cases. Lincoln County has seven cases and Sanders County has none, according to the state department of health.
