Small fires crop up north of Moses Lake

MOSES LAKE — A brush fire near a substation north of Moses Lake sent plumes of black smoke into the air Monday afternoon before quickly being knocked down by firefighters.
Firefighters were dispatched to the fire, which was along Road 7 Northeast a block east of Stratford Road Northeast, shortly before 1:30 p.m. Monday. While a number of smaller fires were found along Road 7 Northeast, the largest was located near a Grant Public Utility District substation, according to Travis Svilar, a captain with Grant County Fire District No. 5.
Though flames reached a power pole between the field and the roadway, no damage was reported, other than to the old-growth sagebrush that filled the field, Svilar said.
The cause of the fires had not been determined, Svilar said, though it did not appear to be related to a power line failure. Given the dry heat permeating the Basin in recent weeks, Svilar said the blaze was a reminder for residents to be cautious about fire hazards as summer begins.
“We like to think fire season is year-round,” Svilar said. “But with this type of weather that we’re having, fire season is very much upon us.”
