Speakers lined up for Fourth of July in George

GEORGE — Since 1957, a Fourth of July celebration has been held every year at the George Community Hall. Even with the coronavirus, this year is no exception.
The celebration will be modified from its normal form because of state health guidelines imposed because of the virus pandemic. Instead of events taking place all day at the community hall and park, only two events will happen – a patriotic observance in the morning and fireworks at 10 p.m.
The patriotic observance and program will start at 10:30 a.m. at the stage in the park. The program will include a flag presentation, a 21-gun salute, the ringing of the Freedom Bell, the Pledge of Allegiance, a performance of “The Star Spangled Banner” and community patriotic singing. There will be addresses by state Sen. Judy Warnick and state Reps. Alex Ybarra and Tom Dent, with a keynote address by 2020 gubernatorial candidate Loren Culp, of Republic.
Because of the ongoing pandemic, participants are asked to use proper social distancing. Attendees should also bring their own lawn chairs.
“We are hoping to be back to normal next year, with the Cherry Bomb Run, Grand Parade, Giant Cherry Pie, food and craft vendors, live entertainment on stage and children’s and family activities,” said Debby Kooy, manager for the George Community Hall. “For now, we are limiting exposure but still celebrating. Folks are welcome to pack a picnic lunch to enjoy in the park in the afternoon in family groups.”
The George Community Hall committee, which is also known for its love of music, is still planning to hold the annual Bluegrass Festival on Sept. 14-20.
The group has also restarted its First Friday Jam and Third Friday Beginners Jam. Both of those events are being held at the park pavilion, next to the community hall. Those wishing to participate or listen should bring their own chairs. Social distancing is practiced at these events.
