Mar. 1, 1970 — FOUR HONORED

The Jaycees and Jay-C-Ettes held their annual Distinguished Service award banquet at the Pastime Cafe. Don Rench, Jaycee state director and a past president was named 1970s DSA winner and Carol Pietsch received the DSA award from the Jay-C-Ettes. Named Outstanding Young Educator was Chuck Schoonover, a coach on the SHS staff. Fran Hiatt, owner of Lakeshore Motors received the Boss of the Year award.

BOOK’S BEAR MADE B&C RECORDS

Ronald Book, 102 S. Lavina, shot his only bear on opening day last fall. He was hunting on Baldy when he saw the big brown bear, but at the time, didn’t realize it might be fit for the Boone & Crockett record book. He sent the big hide off to have a rug made by a Spokane taxidermist, who submitted its measurements and learned it was a trophy animal.

Book estimated the animal weighed 400 pounds. It was 7 feet 9 inches from the tip of the nose to the tip of either hind foot and 7 feet to the tip of the tail.

Book got his bear rug back last week and it nearly fills the width of his living room.

DEATH CLAIMS MAUDE HITCHNER

Following a long illness, Maude Hitchner, 87, passed away at the local hospital Tuesday where she had been a patient for three years. She came to Sandpoint in 1921 and was appointed acting Sandpoint postmaster in 1929, later receiving a permanent appointment and serving until 1934.

Mar. 1, 1920 — CITY BREVITIES

George M. Potter, quarantine officer, reports that there are but two smallpox cases now in the city or in the country about here. The sickness epidemic that came with a great amount of flu and smallpox in the county is now well in hand.

Someone interested in the study of the city fire alarm system Wednesday turned in a false alarm from box 46, corner of Main and Washington, giving the department a run to the city limits.

C.E. Neuman went to City hospital yesterday for a few days’ rest and treatment to recuperate from the after effects of an attack of the flu.

Good five-room house in good condition; good barn and chicken house (buildings cost $1600); with six lots, all in cultivation; some fruit. Will sell for $1000 if taken at once. Inquire of P.O. Ruen.

NEWS FROM HOPE

The village was in darkness Friday night on account of a tree falling over the wires.

The schools will open again Monday in the new school building.
