Manning wins NC primary for 6th Congressional District

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Kathy Manning won Tuesday’s Democratic primary in a Triad-area North Carolina congressional district that has tilted left after recent redistricting.

Manning, a Greensboro attorney and fundraiser for community causes, defeated four others in the primary in the 6th District, which now covers all of Guilford County and part of Forsyth County.

Manning ran unsuccessfully in the 2018 general election against Republican Rep. Ted Budd in the GOP-leaning 13th District. But a state court ruling that found likely partisan gerrymandering favoring Republicans led lawmakers to redraw the state’s congressional map.

That put Manning in a retooled and more left-leaning 6th District and led current district GOP Rep. Mark Walker to not seek reelection.

Manning defeated former Guilford County commissioner Bruce Davis, current state Rep. Derwin Montgomery, former state Rep. Ed Hanes Jr. and Rhonda Foxx, a previous chief of staff to U.S. Rep. Alma Adams.

Manning, the primary field’s top fundraiser, will run in the general election against Republican Lee Haywood, who won Tuesday's GOP primary,
