Superior churches host Lenten lunches

No one remembers when the Lenten Lunch services began in Superior.

“Oh gosh, it has to be 10 to 12 years ago,” said Nancy Wilson who is one of the annual organizers. “It just seems like we’ve always had them.”

Whenever they did start, the church hosting each week would lay out the welcome mat for all to come enjoy their hospitality and fellowship at their location.

Participants would see what each church was like inside and share in their fellowship. What has changed is that a central location would work better, but, a different congregation would sponsor the weekly meal.

So, it has become the Mary Queen of Heaven Catholic Church which is kitty-corner to the Mineral County Library at 204 Second Avenue. The simple menu each Tuesday has been quite consistent over the years with scrumptious homemade soups, a variety of breads and often dessert. Plenty of coffee is a given.

It’s not only a celebration of the Easter season but a great opportunity to visit with friends one may have not seen since the previous year.

It also works well for newcomers to the area to get to know different congregation members if they are shopping for a place of worship.

After most everyone has finished eating, the church who is hosting that week will have their pastor or a lay person take the podium for about a 15-minute celebratory Easter message.

“It’s a meaningful affair and attendance has always been strong. That’s why we do it every spring,” reports Madeline Faller, who is another long-time organizer of the event. There is a free-will offering that is given to a local nonprofit or similar body after Easter which is decided among the participating churches.

Do note the organizers take everyone’s time into consideration so each lunch starts at noon and is over by 1 p.m.
