Marian Ellen Jarrett Hayenga, 92

Marian Ellen Jarrett Hayenga passed away on Feb. 27, 2020. after a full 92 years. She was a lifelong cheerleader for her family and friends by supporting those she loved on and off stages, tennis courts, baseball diamonds, gymnasiums, sports fields and equine arenas.

Marian was born on Oct. 13, 1927, in Conrad, Mont., to Clara Isabella Hutchins and Lawrence Edward Jarrett. She had a passion for creativity and a spirit for adventure. Marian was an avid seamstress, gardener, golfer, mother, aunt, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

At a young age, Marian found mischief and spent her free time riding the rod lines of oil pumps in the oil fields. She would slip off into the cactus patches and then climb back on for another round.

At 14, Marian boarded a train bound for Coeur d’Alene, where she was hired as a housekeeper and a nanny while enrolled at Coeur d’Alene High School.

Following graduation in 1946, Marian became a switchboard operator and worked for Interstate Telephone Co. at Farragut College, where she met Wallace Hayenga. They were married in Kevin, Mont., on Aug. 17, 1947, and spent the next 55 years enjoying Idaho and Washington.

Wallace built them a home and Marian raised their five children. She turned their backyard into a grocery store by planting everything that grows well (and some things that don’t grow well) in North Idaho. The Hayenga home was trademarked by the smell of pickled goods every fall. Marian never found a BERNINA pattern that she could not master. She spent her time crafting family heirlooms that ranged from quilts to wedding dresses.

Marian liked to drink her Budweiser out of a coffee cup while enjoying sports. Since the ’90s, Marian was avoiding an arrest warrant (and harboring this secret!) after missing jury duty to attend the birth of a grandchild. She was famous for her potato salad, mystery-meat casseroles, and could never turn down the opportunity for fresh huckleberries.

Marian was an avid sports fan. During retirement, Wally and Marian played numerous rounds of golf and traveled to their children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events across the United States. Marian never missed a Mariners baseball or a Gonzaga basketball game. She loved parties, family gatherings, and the occasional irresponsible round of penny slots. She loved all things pink and always had a secret M&M’s stash in the freezer. Marian, above all, loved sharing time with family and friends.

Marian is preceded in death by her parents, her four siblings, Bob, Jack, Louis and May, her son, Jeffery (Pat) and husband, Wallace. She is survived by her children and their spouses: Janet (Jim Day), Judy (Hideo) Lambley, John (Yevonne), Jena (Dave Patzer), her nine grandchildren: Phil and Kari, Heidi Lambley-Leavitt and John Lambley, Keaton, Kristen, and Karman, Mason and Makendra Patzer, step-grand-child: Julie Day, her three great-grandchildren: RJ. and Gabriel Lambley, Hunter Leavitt, and step-great-grandchildren: Tayler, Braden, and Kylie Leavitt, and her numerous nieces and nephews. She will be missed by all.

Graveside service for Marian will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, March 7, 2020, at Riverview Cemetery 1001 Lincoln Way; Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. With a family and friends gathering to follow. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Schneidmiller House-Hospice of North Idaho.

Yates Funeral Homes has been entrusted with the care of arrangements. Please visit Marian’s memorial and sign her online guestbook www.yatesfuneralhomes.com.
