COEUR d’ALENE — For their 44th wedding anniversary, Glenda and John Duggan didn’t need to go to a fancy restaurant or out on the town.

Instead, they searched for yard art and found an abundance of cool project ideas they could do together at the North Idaho Building Contractors Association's 48th annual Home and Garden Show at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds on Friday.

“This is a date,” Glenda said with a smile as they poked around a few samples of outdoor sheds.

The Post Falls couple was among the first to explore the show, where friendly experts at more than 125 vendor exhibits eagerly engaged guests in the market for landscaping materials, patio furniture, safety upgrades and pet products, among an array of other goods and services.

“The water softener,” Glenda said. “And the sprinkler blowout, we weren’t even hunting for that.”

“If you live here you know you need a water softener,” John added.

Droves of delighted show-goers wandered through the exhibit halls and walked out of Building 19 with free flowers to plant at home, a perk for the first 250 people to the show each day.

Neighbors Lisa Jewett and Patty Campitelli of Spirit Lake held red and purple primroses as they strolled into the next building.

They had one thing on their mind as they perused the booths.

“Landscaping!” Jewett said.

“Landscaping and a few things that need to be tweaked in the house,” Campitelli said. “I just want to get some ideas, more contemporary. And we have water issues, and there’s a lot of air purifier companies."

This was the friends' first time at the NIBCA Home and Garden Show, where they were pleased to find so many resources.

"If they don't have the answer, they steer you to where you can get the right answers," Campitelli said. "That’s what’s really cool."

The Home and Garden Show continues today from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Admission is $6 per person. Save $1 with a can of food to donate to the local food bank. Kids 12 and younger get in free with a paying adult.

Parking is free.

The fairgrounds are at 4056 N. Government Way.

Cruising around a tall pine with a small measuring tape, Ava Stone examined the numbers and wrote them down on a paper secured to her clipboard. "It's the diameter, and then you take a clinometer from the 66 foot back and then the 100 foot back, then you look up and get the height to find out the board foot volume," she said Thursday morning.
