Man facing federal meth charges

SANDPOINT — A federal grand jury is indicting a Bonner County man on charges of distributing methamphetamine and conspiring to distribute the notoriously addictive stimulant, according to U.S. District Court records.
Thomas Wade Callen was arrested Wednesday in Bonner County Magistrate Court on a federal warrant, moments after state drug trafficking charges against him were dismissed during a preliminary hearing in the case. Callen is also known Tracy Dean Storm and Tracy Dean Pirello, state and federal court records indicate.
Callen, 56, was scheduled to be arraigned via video link on Thursday in federal court in Coeur d’Alene.
Callen was arrested on Feb. 11 and charged with two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm due to a felony conviction and two counts of trafficking meth. Callen was accused of trafficking more than 28 grams of meth on Dec. 10 and Dec. 18, 2019.
Callen was barred from possessing a 12-guage shotgun and a 30.06 rifle due to a felony drug conviction in Bonner County in 2000, court records indicate.
Callen was simultaneously being prosecuted as Tracy Dean Storm for trafficking meth and heroin on Feb. 11, court records show.
Details about Callen’s arrest are hard to come by in the public record. A probable cause affidavit, which outlines the investigation against him, is conspicuously absent from Idaho’s iCourt database.
A woman who shares Callen’s address, Krista Kay Truitt, was also arrested on Feb. 11 on charges possession of meth and hallucinogenic mushrooms. A Bonner County sheriff’s office affidavit is also not on file in her case, which is still pending, court records show.
Notations of the arrest of Callen and Truitt are also redacted from the Bonner Dispatch call log.
However, court documents filed by the Bonner County Public Defender’s Office indicate a confidential informant was used during the investigation of Callen and Truitt. Public defense attorneys successfully moved for the appointment of conflict counsels because that office is representing the unnamed informant in an unspecified criminal matter.
Callen was prosecuted as Tracy Storm in 2014 for trafficking meth in Bonner County in 2014. He pleaded guilty before trial and was ordered to serve a three- to six-year prison term, according to court records. He was granted parole in April 2018, an Idaho Department of Correction document states.
The indictment in the federal case alleges Callen conspired to distribute meth between December 2019 and the date of his arrest in February. It further alleges that Callen distributed meth Dec. 10 and 18, 2019, and again on Jan. 2. He’s accused of possessing 50 grams or more of the drug with the intent of distributing it on Feb. 11.
Federal authorities are seeking the criminal forfeiture of $6,910 that was seized during his arrest, records show.
