BOISE — Despite 35 points from Trevon Allen, No. 10 seed Idaho fell to Southern Utah 75-69 in the first round of the Big Sky Conference Tournament on Wednesday at CenturyLink Arena.
Dre Marin scored 19 points for seventh-seeded Southern Utah, which will play No. 2 Northern Colorado today in the quarterfinals.
“We played a lot tougher today,” Idaho coach Zac Claus said. “We put a premium on boxing out and playing tough defense for the last 48 hours and trying to keep them to one shot. These guys were great, and turned it into a one-possession game late, which we wanted to do. These guys played great. Everyone from top to bottom brought something and showed what we’re capable of. To compete the way we did today, it’s very encouraging.”
Allen’s scoring outburst for Idaho came just days after scoring 32 in a loss to Weber State and 33 in a win over Idaho State.
“I came out and tried to play as hard as I could,” Allen said. “It’s a credit to the guys on the team for finding me and getting me the ball. I’m sad it’s the last one, but I know we left everything we had on the floor.”
“They’re a tough team and been more than a handful for us over the course of the season,” Claus said. “They’ll give Northern Colorado a battle going forward and we wish them well.”
John Knight III added 16 points for Southern Utah (17-15). Cameron Oluyitan scored 12 points, and Andre Adams had 11 points and seven rebounds.
Ja’Vary Christmas added 10 points for Idaho and Damen Thacker had nine rebounds.
