SANDPOINT — The season openers for Sandpoint softball and tennis have been postponed. The announcements were made Thursday afternoon.

Softball postponed its season opening doubleheader at home with Timberlake due to field conditions, according to a tweet by the Sandpoint softball Twitter account. The games were scheduled to be played at 3 p.m. Friday. Athletic Director Kris Knowles said they will work to reschedule the doubleheader.

The Post Falls tennis tournament Saturday, which Sandpoint was going to take part in, has been postponed due to expected temperatures in the low 20’s and a chance for snow in the forecast, according to an email from the Post Falls AD. The tournament will be rescheduled to a later date.

The pair of postponements are just a reminder that despite the mild temperatures over the past few weeks, winter in North Idaho isn’t over yet.

The statewide All-Star basketball games and District 1 All-Star basketball games were canceled Thursday as well out of caution due to the coronavirus. A handful of local athletes were set to play in those contests. Sandpoint’s Kobe Banks, Ryan Roos, Christian Niemela and Brandon Casey were going to play for the boys West team in the District 1 All-Star game at Mullan High on Friday night while Priest River’s Caden Brennan and Jayden Hahn, and Clark Fork’s Josh Constantin were set to suit up for East team.

In the girls District 1 All-Star game, Sandpoint’s Maddie Morgan and Dawson Driggs, Clark Fork’s Sara Hathaway and Ellie Kiebert, and Priest River’s Karah Fink were all scheduled to play.

Driggs was also going to participate in the Idaho All-Star basketball game Saturday at North Idaho College on the girls Region team. That team was going to be coached by Sandpoint’s Will Love.
