Fred W. Shalz, age 71, passed away at Kootenai Medical Center on Feb. 4, 2020. He was born in Coeur d’Alene on Aug. 6, 1948, to Woodrow and Frances Shalz. The third of four children born to Woodrow and Frances, Fred grew up on a farm north of Athol, Idaho, and in 1998, moved to Coeur d’Alene with his parents.

Fred attended Southside School in Cocolalla, Idaho as a child. He later worked alongside his dad on the farm and in the woods as a logger. He was also employed for a time at the local lumber mill. He spent many years taking daily walks between the farm and Athol, and after moving to Coeur d’Alene, he continued those daily excursions around the town.

In 2015, he moved to the Sarah Street Apartments, where he enjoyed the company of the other residents until May of 2018, when he entered Life Care Center of Post Falls, Idaho.

Fred truly loved his daily strolls, fishing, his gemstones and rings, and telling jokes. People enjoyed him because of his good sense of humor and amiable personality.

Fred is survived by sisters Nancy (and Jim) Heuett of Rathdrum, Idaho; Teri Reynolds of Hayden, Idaho; half-sister, Pat (and Ed) Payne of Whitefish, Mont.; half-brother, Gene (and Philomena) Shalz of Great Falls, Mont.; and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff at Life Care Center in Post Falls and doctors and staff at Kootenai Medical Center for their care and compassion during his residency and hospital visits.

A graveside memorial is 4 p.m. Saturday, March 21, 2020, at Pinegrove Cemetery, 6693 W. Highway 53 in Rathdrum.

Arrangements were provided by Yates Funeral Home.
