PREP TRACK AND FIELD: Lake City’s Schnatter shines at chilly Lewiston Invitational
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 5 years, 9 months AGO
LEWISTON — Lake City High senior Jacob Schnatter won the 100- and 200-meter dash as well as the long jump in the Lewiston Invitational at Sweeney Track on Saturday.
The next time he runs, well, that’s unknown.
Schnatter won the 100 in 11.32 seconds, the 200 in 23.03 and jumped 21 feet, 7 inches for the long jump title.
Schnatter, junior Logan Parson and senior Lizzy Wensley were the lone competitors that traveled to the meet for Lake City.
“That’s an unbelievable jump for the weather and time of year,” said Lake City coach Kelly Reed of Schnatter’s jump. “Those three wanted to go because it’s generally a lot nicer and better weather. The rest of the team didn’t go, but they wanted to go for some better competition.”
Coeur d’Alene’s boys and girls teams each finished second, to Lewiston.
After the meet had concluded, Coeur d’Alene School District officials announced that classes were postponed at all district schools until April 6 due to the coronavirus outbreak. That also means athletics at district schools, which includes Coeur d’Alene and Lake City high schools, has been put on pause until then as well.
“I wanted to make sure I rewarded the kids for all their hard work and dedication and putting in the time at practice along with my coaching staff,” Coeur d’Alene coach Justin Aguilar said in an email. “We put in a lot of time with these kids and I just wanted them to get out and compete. When I got the email (that school was closed), my heart just broke for my senior athletes. I just hope that all teams can practice, especially track and field, as it’s not a sport you can step on the track and compete. It takes weeks to get in shape and practice to get your technique down in the field events.”
Lakeland, Timberlake and Sandpoint, also scheduled to compete at the meet, backed out due to weather.
Parson won the discus with a throw of 136-11.
“Logan has changed a ton athletically in the last year,” Reed said. “He’s grown up a ton and has a chance to have a big season, (if) we have a season. We’re really pleased with where he’s at.”
Coeur d’Alene junior Lauren Forster won the 800 (2:31.89) and 1,600 (5:32.40). Junior Nakisha Matheson won the 400 for the Vikings in 1:03.57.
“It was a great day,” Aguilar said. “And the kids had a great time. The weather wasn’t exactly the best. I just hope and pray the season can continue for all the seniors in the country and our school. They deserve it.”
