Gary R. Wescott, USAF, Ret., 85, of Sagle, Idaho, passed away on March 10, 2020, after a brief stay at the Schneidmiller House in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

He was born in Caldwell, Idaho, on Jan. 19, 1935, the son of Raynor and Addie Wescott. Raised in Twin Falls, he graduated from Twin Falls High School in 1953. Following high school, he attended the University of Idaho and enrolled in the ROTC program, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1957. He began his career as a helicopter pilot in the Air Force in 1958 and went on to have an extraordinary 21-year career, retiring in 1979 as a lieutenant colonel.

Gary served overseas, twice in Korea and during the Vietnam War, as a Rescue and Recovery helicopter pilot. Gary was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal with 3 Oak Leaves, Air Medal with 10 Oak Leaves, AF Commendation Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal. In 1977, he earned his master’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado.

Gary married Velma Warren on Sept. 15, 1956 in Sandpoint and together they raised two boys while being stationed throughout the West. Gary shared his passion for the outdoors with his family through innumerable camping and skiing adventures throughout Alaska, Texas, Utah, Wyoming and Idaho.

After his time in the service Gary returned to Sand-point, working as a real estate agent with the Fournier Agency and serving as Chairman of the Southside Water and Sewer District. Gary was a member of the Sand-point Elk’s Lodge and the Schweit-zer Prime Timers. He enjoyed skiing, golfing, hunting, fishing, gardening, home projects, cooking, and entertaining friends.

He is survived by his wife Velma Wescott of Sagle, Idaho; sons Jeff (Tina) Wescott of Hastings, Michigan and Steven Wescott of Seattle, Washington; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Raynor and Addie Wescott, two brothers Bill and Royce, and daughter-in-law Tamara Wescott.

Due to health concerns for all involved, the services will be held at a later date. Details will be announced at that time.
