Summers sworn in as state senator for south Georgia district

ATLANTA (AP) — A Cordele businessman has been sworn in to the state Senate representing a south Georgia district.
Carden Summers, a Republican, took the oath of office on March 9 to represent District 13. It includes all of Crisp, Dodge, Dooly, Lee, Tift, Turner and Worth counties and parts of Sumter and Wilcox counties.
Summers, a real estate agent, farmer and onetime Crisp County commissioner, defeated former Leesburg Mayor Jim Quinn by fewer than 500 votes of 12,000 in a March 3 special election runoff. Summers earlier lost a 2002 state Senate race.
Summers is seeking a full two-year term beginning next year. He faces a Republican primary opponent on May 19 and would face a Democrat in November if he wins his primary.
The seat was vacated after Republican Greg Kirk died in December.
