SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The parents of a Utah woman who died while in jail have settled a lawsuit against a county for $950,000.
Calvin and Kim Ostler sued Salt Lake County over the 2016 death of their daughter, Lisa Marie Ostler, The Salt Lake Tribune reports.
Jailers believed she was suffering withdrawal from opiates, but Ostler suffered from Crohn’s disease, an inflammatory bowel disease that can cause extreme pain and digestive issues, the family's lawsuit said
She died at a hospital April 3, 2016.
A medical examiner determined the 37-year-old died of peritonitis, an inflammation in the abdomen that can lead to a spreading infection.
The money will assist Lisa Ostler’s three children, her parents said, but they hoped to initiate changes in medical policies at the jail. County officials would not discuss the policies, they said.
Salt Lake County officials did not admit to wrongdoing or liability as part of the settlement. An attorney for the county did not respond to a request seeking comment Tuesday.
