A 59-year-old New York man driving a Ford Taurus with South Dakota plates was charged with trafficking marijuana after being chased by police for several minutes Wednesday on I-90 east of Coeur d’Alene.
Gregory Johnson is charged with felony eluding in addition to the trafficking charge. A judge on Thursday set bond at $75,000 and set another hearing within 21 days in First District Court.
Troopers said Johnson was driving erratically heading east over Fourth of July Pass around 1:30 p.m. when state troopers began following the Taurus and eventually tried to pull the car over.
Instead of stopping, police said, Johnson led troopers east for another four minutes before stopping near the Rose Lake exit.
Johnson said he did not stop because he had done nothing wrong, and thought police were chasing someone else.
A state police drug dog alerted on the Taurus, police said, which meant the dog smelled drugs inside the vehicle. The dog’s alert provided the probable cause for troopers to search the car.
Police found six duffel bags in the trunk containing 105 plastic bags filled with about a pound each of marijuana, according to a report.
In addition, police said Johnson had about $2,500 in a black bag inside the car, some of which was bundled with rubber bands.
Johnson has no prior criminal history, police said.
A high bail amount was set in part because Johnson was a flight risk, and because he attempted to elude police, prosecutors said.
Johnson will have a preliminary hearing within 14 days if he does not post bail.
