The black Cadillac headed east on Interstate 90 near the Harrison exit when it gained speed, changed lanes without using a turn signal, accelerated 5 mph above the 65 mph speed limit, and swerved back and forth between lanes, police said.

That’s when state troopers hit their cherry tops and pulled over Christopher S. Morgan, who police say switched seats and sat in the Cadillac’s front passenger seat when troopers approached with their sidearms drawn.

Morgan is a Spokane fugitive who had two prior felonies for forgery and possession of stolen property. He was wanted for escaping community custody.

Troopers said they drew their weapons when approaching the car during the 4:30 p.m. traffic stop because of the frantic movement inside the vehicle after it was pulled over.

“I was concerned there were weapons in the vehicle because of their actions,” Trooper Seth Green wrote in a police report.

Troopers said they found weapons in the Cadillac after seeing drug paraphernalia in plain sight, giving officers cause to search the car.

A Coeur d’Alene judge on Thursday set a $35,000 bail for Morgan, who was booked on two counts of delivering a controlled substance, two counts of trafficking heroin, four counts of grand theft, six counts of being a felon with guns and two counts of possession of drugs.

During their search of the Cadillac and the suspects troopers found more than an ounce of methamphetamine, a half ounce of heroin, fentanyl, marijuana, three semi-automatic handguns, 60 rounds of .223 ammo, as well as a variety of power tools and six cell phones, according to a police report. Troopers confiscated about $2,000 from Morgan’s pockets, police said.

The two passengers in the Cadillac, Kristina Morgan and Wesley D. Goings, were not booked into the Kootenai County jail.

Morgan will have a probable cause hearing within 21 days in Coeur d’Alene’s First District Court.
