Ordinarily, the flags along the Sherman and Lakeside avenues wouldn’t come out until around Memorial Day. But Mayor Steve Widmyer and the Coeur d’Alene Downtown Association decided residents fighting the gloom the coronavirus has spread across North Idaho could use a little remedy.

“The Mayor thought, and I agreed,” explained Downtown Association manager Terry Cooper, “that with the drab atmosphere from everything going on, the downtown could use a little color.”

Cooper estimated about 58 flags were installed along the streets downtown early Thursday morning.

“It’s just something we can do to help boost morale during these uncertain times,” Cooper said. “Maybe it’ll brighten someone’s day.”
