Mar. 29, 1970 – WATER RATE INCREASE

Even after a $2 monthly increase, Sandpoint’s water rates will be among the lowest regionally. City residents’ municipal utility bill is now $6 per month, $3 for water and the balance for sewer and garbage services. After the increase, their water bill will increase to $5 for unlimited usage.

The $3 rate has been in effect since 1957. Prior to that, the rate was $2.50 for so long that even old-timers find it difficult to recall if it ever was less.

ROLLING VOLLIES

Winners of the seventh grade girls rec program volley ball tournament were Kristi Weisz, Melanie Newcomb, Sally Chronic, Sue Cove, Darcy Piehl, Valerie Plaster, Debbie DeMers, Glory Whittaker, Darlene Peterson, Sandy Olson, Susan Deden, Julie McCormick and Sonja Olson. Pat Smith was coach for the Monday night program sponsored by Sandpoint City Recreation at the junior high.

OFFICERS ELECTED

Sandpoint Jay-C-Ettes met Thursday in the home of Deanna Hiatt to elect officers. Mary Boehm is the new president; Deanna Hiatt, vice president; Sharon Rench, secretary-treasurer; and Linda Hiatt, state director. After the meeting, Linda Hiatt was honored with a pink and blue shower and a beautifully decorated cake in the same theme was served. April’s meeting will be at the home of Carol deHaan.

Mar. 29, 1920 – BOARD LIFTS SALARIES

It will cost the school district $10,000 more for teaching staff next year. At Monday’s school board meeting, the salary schedule for teachers was raised to meet the increased schedules for other Idaho schools and to protect the district in securing any teachers at all for next year.

Among recommendations adopted by the board: Teachers already on staff and possessing either two full years normal training or state certificates will start next year at $1200; no new teachers will be employed without two years normal training; the seventh, eighth and ninth grades will be organized on the junior high school basis; all of the Farmin building will be devoted to junior and senior high school; no married women with small children will be employed; an effort will be made to bring the 14 children from the Great Northern school to Lincoln school, and four rooms will be added at Washington school for pupils moved from the Farmin building and the City hall.

HIGH SCHOOL NOTES

Mr. Hagle and a number of high school boys spent last Saturday fixing up the lot back of the First National bank (NW corner of 2nd and Cedar) for a track field. Two jumping pits were finished.

The high school paper, “The White Pine,” will be issued today and anyone desiring a copy may get it at the high school building.
