OTHELLO — A Mother’s Day parade passed by Coventry House assisted living community in Othello on Sunday as families drove by to see, and celebrate, their mothers out front.
“They would have their windows down, they would say hello,” Coventry House administrator Sarah Montemayor said. “If they had flowers or anything like that, staff would get them so they could wipe them down and give them to the residents once they were inside.”
Montemayor said they had somewhere between 15 and 18 of their 22 mothers come outside for the parade on Sunday. Cars filled with children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were met with smiles from the residents.
“They were all happy, families were happy,” Montemayor said. “For some of them, it may have been the first time they’d seen them.”
Montemayor said they’ve set up a visiting window up front, and a specific area has been set up so families can come to visit. Other families have elected to go the windows outside the residents’ rooms to visit. For a lot of residents, Sunday marked the first time they’d seen their grandchildren or other family members since the COVID-19 closures went into effect, Montemayor said.
The Coventry House staff has worked to help residents set up Zoom meetings, or FaceTime calls, to keep connected, Montemayor said. The past few weeks have been tough on residents, she added.
Montemayor said they’ve worked to keep the family up to date on what’s going on and how everyone’s doing through their Facebook page, while encouraging families to reach out.
“Resident-wise, I have seen more cards, more flowers, just more things dropped by in general,” Montemayor said.
For the most part, Montemayor said they’ve tried to keep the routine the same for residents, the only major differences being a split in meal times to have only certain residents coming down at a time.
