SANDPOINT — Sandpoint High School will be holding Declaration Day for seniors on Wednesday, May 13, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Student Leadership Adviser Mary Imaz said the student council will be in attendance.

As high school seniors all around the world prepare to cross their biggest academic finish line yet, Sandpoint High School’s student council has been on the sidelines rooting for their peers every step of the way.

“We are going to be kind of the cheerleaders,” Imaz said. “The student council will be there just cheering them on and welcoming everybody, obviously keeping their distance.”

Counselor Jeralyn Mire and college and career mentor Kendall Lang organized the event, where students can submit a picture of themselves wearing their college or work spirit wear for display or drive to the school and get their picture taken with decorations. This event is designed to acknowledge students moving from high school to the work place, to trading schools, colleges or other career building opportunities.

In addition to volunteering for Declaration Day, Imaz and Sandpoint High School’s student council celebrated seniors last Friday by planting over 234 signs in the seniors’ yards. Imaz said over 20 teachers volunteered to pass out signs to 18 different areas. Each group received about 20 signs to pass out, the majority belonging to downtown Sandpoint. Most groups finished in about two and a half hours.

“It was fantastic,” Imaz said. “The teachers came in on Thursday and picked up their signs, because we divided it amongst different areas through Bonner County. They had their addresses and kids numbers and then on Friday we all went out with our group and delivered all of them to the kid’s residences.”

Imaz said the teachers were most excited about seeing the kids. One student even messaged Imaz after the student spotted her driving by their house. The entire event made teachers feel the closest they’ve been to their students in a while.

“It was really, really nice to have all of these teachers volunteer and wanting to be part of it,” Imaz said. “I got a lot of feedback from the volunteers saying that this was so much fun just to do that for our seniors. It wasn’t a chore, it wasn’t something we had to do. It was something they wanted to do.”

Sandpoint High School Student Council arranged for teachers to deliver the signs as a way to celebrate seniors and honor teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week. The signs were designed by Mountain Sky Signs and Printing. Signs were paid for by the student council’s 2019-2020 school year funds.

More end of the year events and celebrations are under review at that time. No final decision has been made about Sandpoint High School’s 2020 graduation ceremony.
