MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake City Council will reconsider whether to build a managed homeless camp at Longview Tracts at its next meeting, following a day of heated community feedback to the proposal, according to city officials.

The decision comes two days after the council voted 6-1 to approve the location for the camp and the same day as a letter from Moses Lake School District expressing opposition to the site. The selected site is near Longview Elementary School and along Longview Street Northeast.

At the upcoming May 26 meeting, the same site will be presented again to the council, with council members to be given the option to scrap their previous decision and search for a new site, said City Manager Allison Williams. However, according to council member Dean Hankins, who was involved in selecting the site, all other parcels owned by the city had been previously considered and ruled out.

Beyond the placement of the managed homeless camp, meant to serve as emergency temporary housing that can take in new people 24/7, the council will also be considering the future placement of semi-permanent supportive housing, Williams said. A site plan provided to council members at Tuesday’s meeting had originally envisioned that addition directly north of the camp.
