Demanding a new depot

Several representatives of the Great Northern stopped over in Priest River last week and conferred with L. E. Van Winkle, president of the Commercial Club, on Priest River’s demand for a new depot.

90 Years Ago — 1930

New highway bridge finished

The bridge crossing the Priest River on the new highway was completed, all cleaning up of timbers and other obstructions having been removed.

80 Years Ago — 1940

C.C.C. camp loses a member

Camp F-164 had the misfortune of losing one of its boys, Doris Bennett, on May 28. He was killed by a falling snag on a controlled burn in Squaw Valley.

70 Years Ago — 1950

Olson to Build Retail Lumber Yard

E. C. Olson, of Kaniksu Forest Products, Inc., announces he has purchased a plot of ground from Schaeffer-Hitchcock and will start on the building of a lumber yard in Priest River. The new lumber yard will handle all kinds of finished lumber and building materials. The firm’s location is one block south of Albeni Road and a block from the Priest River Hospital.

60 Years Ago — 1960

‘Silver’ is top prize

Boys and girls throughout Priest River and surrounding trade area will be interested to learn of the big annual subscription drive being sponsored again this year by the Times, starting May 27. This newspaper is going to give away a real live Shetland pony named “Silver,” plus four other grand-prize awards, plus hundreds of dollars in cash prizes to youngsters of school age through 15 years willing to spend a little time and effort to win one of the fine premiums being offered.

50 Years Ago — 1970

Self-taught inventor dies

Louis S. Pearsall, who won fame through his line of all-wood Mohican toys, died May 27 in Spokane. He had been a resident of the Priest River area since 1919.

40 Years Ago--1980

Protesters block loans

Protesters from area landlords and other residents have resulted in the Idaho Housing Agency disapproving a loan for the rehabilitation of the Beardmore Building, according to the agency director. Wally Johnson said the protests also influenced the disapproval for a three-story, 24-unit apartment building planned by Jim Flavel. Both projects would have provided housing for low-income senior citizens.

30 Years Ago — 1990

Luby Bay offers pristine camping

Luby Bay campground is one of six National Forest camping areas located along the west shore of Priest Lake. Divided into two sections, the facility offers 52 campsites. Both sites have tables, fire devices, restrooms, drinking water and garbage collection facilities. The greatest feature of each is their close proximity to famous Priest Lake.

20 Years Ago — 2000

Ardy’s open in Coolin

Ardy’s Bakery and Café is the hot new restaurant/bakery in Coolin. In the same building with the restaurant there is a lovely little retail shop that has T-shirts, paintings and knick-knacks. Ralph and Ardy Ahlefeld opened the business in 1999.
