HOMEDALE — Tied 7-7 after the first quarter, top-seeded Homedale took the momentum away from visiting Timberlake after a blocked punt for a touchdown en route to a 55-19 win over the No. 8 Tigers in the state 3A quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon.
“We put ourselves in bad positions in the first half,” Timberlake coach Kelly Amos said. “They onside kicked on us and scored, and we put ourselves in bad situations. Against a good team, you can’t make those mistakes and it cost us as the game progressed.”
Timberlake finishes 4-4 in Amos’ first season into his second stint as coach.
Timberlake lost to Homedale in the 3A semifinals in 2019.
“They’re a different type of team this year,” Amos said. “They’re more run-oriented and rely on their defense. We sold out to stop the run and their quarterback was able to complete some passes. They’re as good as any team as there is in the state.”
Junior Ashton Peightal threw for 170 yards and two touchdowns for a young Timberlake squad which had just five seniors on this year’s team.
“Our kids, they just don’t give up,” Amos said. “We played all season with only five seniors, and a lot of guys that didn’t have any varsity experience. Our kids kept playing as hard as they could. When bad things happened, they just kept going.”
Homedale (6-2) will play host to South Fremont (8-2) in the semifinals next weekend.
