There’s a star-studded cast of All-State volleyball players in Class AA, and one of the ones at the top is Glacier’s Morgan Hernandez.
Hernandez, a senior, was the Wolfpack’s lone first-team All-State pick, at Libero. Her skill on the back line has landed her a scholarship to play at NAIA Dickinson (N.D.) State University.
The Bluehawks may not play at the level of Montana State — where Western AA Player of the Year Audrey Hofer of Helena Capital is headed — or Boise State (Capital’s Paige Bartsch), but Hernandez is excited about the opportunity.
“Since about eighth grade is when I decided I’d like to continue my volleyball career into college,” Hernandez, who was second in AA in digs per set and owns the second-highest pass rating in Glacier history.
Last season Hernandez played some outside hitter at 5-foot-6 before switching to Libero this past season. Glacier went 9-5 and lost at Great Falls CMR in the State AA quarterfinals..
“I used to play all the way around,” Hernandez said. “But I’ve kind of fallen in love with the back row. I like the rush you get because you never know where the ball is going to come from.”
“She’s very consistent and very aggressive,” Glacier coach Christy Harkins said. “It’s been her dream even before she was a freshman to play college volleyball. I knew she would find a place somewhere.”
Crown College in St. Bonifacious, Minnesota was another option, but Hernandez opted for a school that is closer to Kalispell — 11 hours instead of 17 — with a better financial set-up. A signing ceremony is planned for 4 p.m. today at Glacier High.
Hernandez plans to study elementary education with an emphasis on coaching and an eye toward administration.
“She’s a happy, positive kid,” Harkins said. “She’s our student body president, and one of our captains this year. She’s just an all-around great person.”
Glacier senior setter Kaylee Fritz, who is headed to UM-Western for volleyball, was second-team All-State; Wolfpack senior middle hitter Emma Anderson, who is headed to UM-Western for basketball, was second-team all-Western AA, as was senior outside hitter Kynzie Mohl and junior outside hitter Sidney Gulick.
Flathead’s Savanna Sterck, a junior outside hitter, was second-team all-Western AA.
Three-time state champion Capital had three players named first-team All-State, including Hofer, who was named an Under Armour All-American team last week.
State runner-up Great Falls CMR had two first-team selections.
The entire list of AA honors teams can be found in Scoreboard, Page B2.
