EVERETT, Wash. (AP) — A Tulalip Fish and Wildlife police officer is missing and presumed dead after a rogue wave hit a patrol vessel, causing it to capsize, Tulalip police said Wednesday.
Officer Shawn Edge, the boat's captain, and Officer Charlie Cortez had followed another boat into the Everett Marina on Tuesday night to ensure it returned safely and were heading to the Tulalip Bay Marina when the 24-foot (7.3 meters) vessel was hit by a wave and capsized, police said in a press release.
Both men were thrown into the water. Officer Edge was located and rescued near Hat Island by a Tulalip Tribal fisherman. He's recovering in the hospital, police said.
Officer Cortez was still missing on Wednesday and presumed dead. He's the first Tulalip police officer to die in the line of duty, police said.
“As our search and rescue effort transitions to a search and recovery, we are heartbroken," said Tulalip Chairwoman Teri Gobin. “Our people are connected to the water and we know what we risk when we go out. Today we lost a good man, a father, brother and son,.”
“Our hands go up to the many fishermen and rescue workers who answered the call to find our missing officer. In the face of tragedy, our community came together and we will continue to come together as we take care of his family.”
Tulalip Police Chief Chris Sutter said the department is devastated by this loss. He said the search would continue until their missing officer is brought home.
Heavy rain and high winds hit Washington on Tuesday, making the water around coastal areas rough.
