SPIRIT LAKE — Taryn Soumas made two of her four 3-pointers in the third quarter as the host Timberlake Tigers pulled away to beat their in-district rival Lakeland Hawks 48-35 in nonleague play on Tuesday night.

Soumas, who scored eight points in the quarter, finished with a game-high 18 for Timberlake (2-1).

Lakeland (0-2) trailed 20-18 at halftime, but took a three-point lead early in the third quarter before Timberlake took control.

“We finally got some shots to fall,” Timberlake coach Matt Miller said. “I was happy with the looks we got in the first half, but nothing was falling.”

Brooke Jessen added 15 points for Timberlake.

Katy Ryan scored 13 points, Addie Kiefer 11 for Lakeland.

“Their length in general is tough to handle, with Ryan and Kiefer and (Kenna) Simon,” Miller said of Lakeland. “They beat us up on the boards pretty good. Our first two games we played well defensively, but I don’t think we ever really tightened up the whole game tonight.”

Next Tuesday, Lakeland plays host to Kellogg, and Timberlake travels to Lakeside.
