MOSES LAKE — A rededication ceremony for the Peace Pole near the Moses Lake Library on Fifth Avenue will be held on Sunday, Oct. 4, at 2 p.m. The ceremony will feature readings from participants who wish to read, on the history of the Peace Pole and quotes on peace.
Louis Logan, who organized the committee that installed the pole in Moses Lake in 1989, said the rededication ceremony acts as a chance for people to come together and discuss ways to better unify as a society.
The original dedication ceremony came at the end of a peace march through downtown Moses Lake in 1989, the same year of Washington’s state centennial celebration. The Peace Pole features plaques in four languages chosen at the time of its installation: English, Spanish, Russian and Japanese. Each language was carefully selected for a specific reason, or to highlight a specific community at the time.
Upon its installation, Logan said it was understood that the Peace Pole would act as a place where people could come together to express a desire for peace, especially in times of unrest. With so much division, he said, the focus must remain on what unites us.
Attendees on Sunday afternoon are asked to wear face masks and maintain social distancing.
