BUTTE — Whitefish’s Billy Smith leads the boys field at the State A golf tournament in Butte after the first round.

Smith shot par — a 70 at Butte Country Club on Thursday.

Defending champion Cameron Kahle, also of Whitefish, fired a 72 to tie with Carson Hackmann of Laurel.

The Whitefish boys are first place with 305 strokes in the team race. Second place Billings Central had 324 and Polson was fifth with 345. Three-time defending team champion Laurel was 23 strokes back in third place.

Whitefish’s Marcus Kilman is tied for fifth overall with 78 strokes and just out of the top 15 were Johnny Nix with 85 and Bjorn Olson with 90.

Polson golfers Torrin Ellis finished with 87, Carson Hupka 85, Hunter Emerson 87 and Christian Lund 86.

As expected, Corvallis’ Macee Greenwood led the girls field with 5-over par 70, the only golfer in the girls field to break 80. Last year’s medalist Hannah Adams is still in striking distance with 82 strokes.

Ronan golfer Macao Jackson shot 96, and is tied for 10th place.

Ellie Thiel of Polson shot 99 and was tied for 12th.

Whitefish’s Anyah Cripe and Makenna Woody finished the day with 102 strokes. Kendall Reed had 104, Maddie Sramek 112, and Anna Elm 109.
