Hearing waived in vehicular manslaughter case

SANDPOINT — A Sagle woman charged with vehicular manslaughter is waiving her right to a preliminary hearing in Bonner County Magistrate Court, records show.

Frythe Kathleen Peine's waiver amounts to tacit agreement that the state possesses enough evidence to justify a trial in 1st District Court. Peine is scheduled to be arraigned on the felony charge in district court on Oct. 19. She is free on an $80,000 surety bond while the case is pending, court records show.

Peine, 47, is accused of running her husband down on Lakeshore Drive near Greenwood Hill Drive with her Mercedes GLK350 sport utility vehicle following an argument inside the vehicle. The couple, according to an Idaho State Police report, had been drinking in a bar in Sagle prior to the altercation.

Kraig Phillip Peine exited the SUV during the argument and walked westbound on the county road before being struck, according to court documents. Frythe Peine rated her level of intoxication as a five on a 10-scale, the police report said. She told police she may have looking at her phone at the time the collision, the report said.

Kraig Peine, 41, was a Sandpoint native who and former student-athlete at Sandpoint High School who competed at the Idaho State Wresting Tournament. He formed his own construction company and was remembered in an obituary as a skilled carpenter and mason who left his mark on homes around the area.

Kraig Phillip Peine, passed away the night of July 31 at the age of 41 after being involved in an automobile accident.

Kraig was born in Sandpoint, Idaho, on January 7, 1979, to Noel and Kerry (DeSoto) Peine. He attended Sandpoint High School. During high school, Kraig was an accomplished wrestler and even competed at the Idaho State Wrestling Tournament. Later he went on to work in construction and eventually started his own company, Peine Construction. He had a talent for art and woodworking. He was a skilled carpenter and stone worker, leaving his talents in many homes around the area.
