HOLIDAYS
Virus Outbreak-Holiday Shopping: Halloween is still a month away, but America’s biggest retailers are hoping you’ll put down your pumpkin spice latte and turn your attention to holiday shopping. Stores like Best Buy, Macy’s, and Target want to extend their Black Friday deals into October to avoid crowds in November and December. And with more people expected to shop online, retailers don’t want a rush of online orders closer to Christmas, when it costs them more to ship quickly. SENT Monday, photos.

Virus-Outbreak-Online-Learning-Complaints: As parents help their children navigate remote classes during the coronavirus pandemic, they’re more aware of what’s being taught. And they’ve complained that racist, sexist and other concerning content has appeared in an online learning program called Acellus that’s used nationwide. SENT Sunday, photos.

Craft Cocktails at Home: When the pandemic hit the United States, a lot of social drinking moved back home. Many restaurants offer cocktails to go, and liquor stores have cocktails in a can. There also are several new books out offering help to the home bartender. By Elizabeth Karmel. UPCOMING Tuesday, 900 words, photos.

FRIENDS AND FAMILY
Virus Outbreak-One Good Thing-Family Ties: Lunisol Guzman was a warm, big-hearted woman. As a single mother, she raised three children; in her late 40s, she adopted two more. Then, tragedy. Guzman died of COVID-19, and her 4-year-old boy and 2-year-old girl were motherless. But they would not be left alone. Guzman’s adult daughters — 32-year-old Katherine and 28-year-old Jennifer — have stepped up to raise the children their mother embraced in middle age. UPCOMING Monday, photos, video.
Virus Outbreak-One Good Thing-Tutu Girls: Four young cancer survivors who met while in treatment didn’t let the pandemic keep them from their annual reunion. The Florida girls, all 7 or nearly so, donned their matching tutus for a Zoom meetup instead, continuing a tradition that reflects their bond and the rough road they’ve shared. UPCOMING Thursday, photos.

DOWN TIME
Cineworld-Closures: Hundreds of Regal, Cineworld and Picturehouse movie theaters will close temporarily in the US and UK after the owner said that delays to the latest James Bond film left it with few blockbusters to attract customers during the pandemic. The troubles reflect both Cineworld’s own heavy debt load as well as uncertainty around the wider industry. Its shares fell as much as 58% on Monday. SENT Monday, photos.

Monuments Project: The Mellon Foundation announces $250 million to pay to “create, contextualize and relocate” monuments. Organizers say the five-year project will transform the way history is told in public spaces. UPCOMING Monday, photos.
