UPCOMING:
VIRUS OUTBREAK-TRUMP-HE GETS IT: Trump’s declaration that he “gets it” now that he has contracted COVID-19 evokes other moments when he has said he understands a major issue -- from airlines to the environment to foreign policy -- because of his own personal experience. Not only does that raise questions about how the president relates to Americans with different backgrounds, but his claim to “get” coronavirus was undermined immediately by his decision to take an SUV ride to salute supporters. UPCOMING: 900 words, photos by 5 p.m.
ELECTION 2020 - BIDEN: With Trump stricken by the virus, Biden is trying to capitalize on having the campaign trail all to himself, stepping up travel to areas long thought to be leaning Republican as his campaign looks to expand the electoral map. UPCOMING: 900 words, photos by 6 p.m.
SENT/DEVELOPING
VIRUS OUTBREAK: President Donald Trump says he will leave the military hospital and return to the White House Monday evening. Trump tweeted that he would be leaving after being treated for three days for symptoms of COVID-19 and continue his recovery at the White House. He tweeted that he felt better than he had in 20 years. The news comes as the White House is still learning of the scale of the outbreak within the complex. Press secretary Kayleigh McEnany tested positive for the coronavirus Monday morning. SENT: 1200 words, photos.
ELECTION 2020 – TRUMP: President Trump’s reelection campaign now enters the final month grappling with deficits in the polls, a shortage of cash and a candidate who is at least temporarily sidelined. The president’s team is launching what it calls “Operation MAGA” to propel his campaign forward. SENT: 1000 words, photos.
ELECTION 2020 – PENCE: Vice President Mike Pence will take a leading role in campaigning around the country in the final stretch before the Nov. 3 election, aiming to keep the president’s supporters energized and deflecting criticism of his handling of a virus that has killed nearly 210,000 Americans. The president’s COVID-19 diagnosis has intensified scrutiny of the administration’s cavalier approach to the pandemic. SENT: 1000 words, photos.
ELECTION 2020 – WATCH: President Trump spent the weekend in the hospital after testing positive for COVID-19, a stunning development that injected a new layer of chaos into an already turbulent 2020 contest just one month before Election Day. What we’re watching heading into a new week on the 2020 campaign: SENT: 820 words, photos.
TRUMP-BARR -VOTER FRAUD: In the run up to Election Day, Trump is seizing on small, potentially routine voting issues to suggest the election is rigged. But there is no evidence there is any widespread voter fraud as the president has suggested. Nevertheless, his comments have been amplified by his campaign, supporters and allies, including Attorney General William Barr, adding heft to the claims. SENT: 640 words, photos.
AP POLL -VIRUS OUTBREAK -FOREIGN POLICY: More Americans blame the U.S. government instead of foreign nations for the coronavirus crisis in the United States, a rebuke to the Trump administration’s contention that China or other countries are most at fault, according to a new poll by The University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy and The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. SENT: 950 words, photos.
ELECTION 2020 -VOTING - BALLOT DELAYS: Voters awaiting results in some of the key presidential battleground states on election night should be prepared to keep waiting, thanks to obstacles that will slow the count for what is expected to be a crush of mailed-in ballots amid the coronavirus pandemic. Rules in some crucial states prevent or give clerks little time to begin sorting ballots and verifying signatures before the election. That’s priming a scenario in which results may come in days — or even weeks — later. SENT: 1080 words, photos.
ELECTION 2020 - CALIFORNIA VOTING: The Nov. 3 election will test California’s commitment to voting by mail as the nation’s most populous state will offer fewer in-person polling places hoping it will convince more people to cast ballots from the safety of their mailboxes during a pandemic. SENT: 780 words, photos.
EXPLAINING ELECTION 2020 -BALLOT PROBLEMS: If a ballot is tossed because of some issue — maybe a missing signature or it got damaged — will the voter be notified that the ballot’s been invalidated? And can the voter cast a new ballot? SENT: 335 words, graphic.
