ST. MARIES — Priest River girls soccer nearly captured its first win of the season Tuesday night, tying St. Maries 3-3.

The game was called with 10 minutes left "due to a light catching on fire from an osprey nest," head coach Rob Lawler said. No surprise given we are living in the year 2020.

Lawler said his team started slow in the first half, but found something in the final 40 minutes.

"I moved a couple players around in the second half, switched out a midfielder and a forward and it just really started clicking," he said. "I think we found the rhythm and definitely had momentum when the game got called. We won the second half and everybody just started making passes and connecting to feet and it was a lot of fun to watch them click."

The Spartans were without four players for Tuesday's match due to injury, so each team only had nine players on the field.

Freshman Marley Burgess-Duquette had two goals and senior Makia Fitzmorris tallied a goal and two assists.

"I could say something about every single player," Lawler said. "I'm proud of the girls."

Priest River (0-10-1) is the No. 6 seed in next week's district tournament that starts Monday. As of right now, only 10 players will be available to play for the Spartans in their opening district tourney match, Lawler said.
